When Shareef came out of the closet, his parents didn’t take it well – his mother sent him to live with his father and his father ultimately kicked him out as well. A long period of estrangement with his father followed, punctuated only by infrequent exchanges. Ultimately, it was Shareef’s HIV diagnosis that put things in perspective for his father and thawed the relationship.
